Bees play tough against Wolves, fall in double-overtime

St. Ambrose battled with league leader Cardinal Stritch University on Wednesday afternoon in Davenport. The visitors came away with a 3-2 double-overtime victory at the St. Vincent's Athletic complex. The Wolves, who are receiving votes in the NAIA Top 25 Poll, move to 9-3-1 overall and 8-1-1 in conference, while the Bees drop to 5-8-2 overall and 2-8-1 in the league.

SAU took the lead in the 22nd minute when an errant back pass from the CSU defense was stolen by Rory Hannon, who was able to get around the keeper and slot the ball home for a goal. Miguel Bayma kept the Bees ahead after making a save in the 33rd minute. St. Ambrose would take a 1-0 lead into halftime.

Things got chippy in the second half with 20 fouls called between the teams. Cardinal Stritch had the opportunity to tie the game in the 70th minute, but back-to-back attempts from Salvador Nunez and Nicholas Lopez hit the crossbar. The Wolves would get the equalizer five minutes later from Nunez. In the 84th minute, Jacob Mulvihill got on the end of a Joseph Gaither corner kick. Mulvihill looped a header into the top left corner, just out of the reach of CSU's keeper to give SAU a 2-1 lead with six minutes to go. Cardinal Stritch would respond just two minutes later to send the game into extra time.

The Wolves garnered two shots in the first overtime, and the Bees none as the game would head to a second overtime period. Cardinal Stritch would notch the game-winner 42 seconds into the second overtime for the 3-2 victory.

Bayma was credited with three saves in the loss. Justin Tackett had two shots, and Ricky Rueda recorded one.

SAU will be back at home on Saturday to face Trinity International on Senior Day at 5 p.m.
