Bees cannot capitalize on stellar first half defensive performance

Coming off a tough conference loss, the Bees looked to rewrite the script for their Sunday afternoon game. Things looked promising as SAU held Ottawa to only two goals in the first period but could not capitalize on the offensive end in the first half. Therefore, the Bees dropped a game to Ottawa, 17-3.

The St. Ambrose defense held RV Ottawa (KS) to only two scores to start the game. However, the Bees had a difficult time finding the back of the net. No St. Ambrose goals were scored in the first period.

To start the second, Makaile Shaddix gave the Bees a spark, scoring at the 8:57 mark. This would only have SAU down by one score. For the remainder of the period, no other Bee uniform could score. Ottawa would go on to score twice more to have the Bees down 4-1 going into halftime. St. Ambrose was still within striking distance, however.

It was Makaile Shaddix yet again to score for the Bees. He notched a goal at the 13:12 mark directly after halftime to bring the Bees within two. The rest of the third would sting for SAU as they allowed three unanswered goals before scoring once more. This goal from Ayden Fraelle would come at the 8:27 mark but it would be too late as Ottawa would score four more after. These goals sunk any chance SAU would have for a comeback victory. At the end of the third, Ottawa would be up 11-3 with the Bees itching to score anyway possible.

St. Ambrose would go cold in the last 15 minutes of play as they did not score. Ottawa seemed to find their best offensive performance of the game, scoring six goals. The final decision 17-3 with Ottawa pulling a win out from underneath SAU.

Makaile Shaddix scored two goals as Ayden Fraelle scored the other lone goal. Eli Hahn gathered one assist.

Lachlan Hodge notched 12 saves in his time between the pipes for the Bees. He also secured three ground balls, a team high on the day. Isaac Martinez collected two saves on the afternoon.

St. Ambrose (7-6, 2-2) is looking to find their touch again when they host Augustana College, Thurs. night. Faceoff is slated for 6 p.m. at St. Vincent's Athletic Complex. The Bees will also be celebrating their seniors for the hard work they show on and off the field.
