Stout defense leads to offense for the Bees

The Bees traveled to Fremont, Neb. Wednesday evening and held Midland to only 17 total shots on the evening. This stellar defensive performance routed a 14-1 victory for SAU as they improve to (7-4, 2-1).

The first quarter would prove to be few and far in-between goals for both squads. Eli Hahn had a quick start, scoring 20 seconds into the first. This gave the Bees the 1-0 lead. Then, SAU and Midland had a difficult time finding the back of the net as the next nine minutes of play would go scoreless. Until, Midland scored at the 5:33 mark to tie the game 1-1. No other goals would be scored the remainder of the period.

St. Ambrose came alive in the second with five unanswered goals. Once the Bees gained the lead, they would run away with the game. St. Ambrose never haltered and allowed a goal the remainder of the game. Goals in the second came from Zach Priami, Ayden Fraelle, Makaile Shaddix, and two from Matt Cortopassi. This lifted the Bees to a 6-1 lead going into halftime.

The second half was similar to the second period. The Bees continued to find the back of the net while standing tall on defense, not allowing anything easy for Midland. The Bees would go on to tally eight more goals while not allowing another score for Midland. The final decision of 14-1 would earn St. Ambrose another win on the season.

Eli Hahn, Matt Cortopassi, and Ayden Fraelle each tallied three goals for SAU. Ian Ban and Makaile Shaddix chipped in two. Zach Priami scored one. Matt Cortopassi and Isaiah Hahn each added two assists. Joey Curzon and Makaile Shaddix collected one.

Joe Campbell led the way with eight ground balls on 9-12 face off opportunities. Cortopassi and Shaddix had four each while Eli Hahn, Aidan Fergus, Dawson Dickerson, and Joey Curzon gathered three pickups apiece.

Defensively, Dominic Della Vedova, created four caused turnovers.

Lachlan Hodge and Isaac Martinez split halves between the posts for the Bees. Hodge collated nine saves on ten shots in his 30 minutes of play. Martinez was credited with one save on the evening.

SAU was highly successful on their clear attempt opportunities by having 19-21 clear attempts successful.

Coming up, the Bees prepare to face Benedictine in an important conference match up. Faceoff is slated for tomorrow (April 12) at 7 p.m. in Atchison, Kan.
