St. Ambrose drops close conference match

The Bees hosted #4 William Penn for the first game of the doubleheader conference match on Saturday morning. SAU showed a promising performance but came up short. St. Ambrose stayed course with #4 William Penn for the first half but couldn't keep the pace with the Statesmen for the final 16-7. 

The Statesmen struck first with two back to back goals before St. Ambrose got on the board. Ayden Fraelle (assist Alex Tomaszewski) scored the first goal for the Bees at the 10:25 mark in the first. #4 William Penn would score again before SAU scored two back to back goals to end the first period. At the end of the first, it was tied up at three all.

St. Ambrose would go on to score two more goals in the second. Goals came from Ayden Fraelle and Matt Cortopassi. This would give the Bees the 5-3 advantage. The Statesmen just would not go away. They answered back with three goals of their own to regain the lead 6-5. The score remained 6-5 going into the halftime break.

In the third period, the Bees go cold and could not find the back of the net. #4 William Penn had the momentum and scored three unanswered goals to extend their lead 9-5. But, SAU was still within striking distance. 

The Bees would score to start the fourth quarter. It was Ayden Fraelle yet again for the Bees. He gave SAU a fighting chance at 9-6 but they could not gain momentum and capitalize. #4 William Penn would outscore St. Ambrose 7-2 in the final period as the decision maker. 

Ayden Fraelle was the top scorer for the Bees as he had three goals while Zach Priami and Matt Cortopassi scored two apiece. Isaiah Hahn led the way in assists for the Bees, having two in the game. Zach Priami, Eli Hahn, Makaile Shaddix, and Alex Tomaszewski all chipped in one. 

Adam Kraft collected five ground balls for a team high. Eli Hahn had four pickups and four caused turnovers while Dawson Dickerson and Makaile Shaddix each earned three pickups. Dickerson collected four caused turnovers on the afternoon as well. 

Lachlan Hodge stood strong in net for SAU as he collected 24 saves within the 60 minutes of play. Hodge also collected four ground balls.

Next, the Bees (6-4, 2-1) will travel for three road games. SAU will head to Midland on Wed., Apr. 10 for a 7 p.m. game time.
