Shaddix hits milestone as Bees rally to win

St. Ambrose scored seven straight goals over the second and third periods to defeat Mount Vernon Nazarene 11-9 Wednesday afternoon at St. Vincent's.

Two of those goals came from Makaile Shaddix, who scored his 100th career point in the victory.

The Bees trailed 4-3 after one quarter, but then would not surrender another goal until the closing minutes of the third thanks to a dominant defensive effort. Shaddix, Isaiah Hahn and Matt Cortopassi each scored during the second quarter that saw SAU take a 6-4 lead into the halftime break.

St. Ambrose continued its run in the third. Hahn and Cortopassi each scored to extend the lead to 8-4. Then Shaddix followed with a pair, the second of which put him at 100 points in his Bee career, and upped the margin to 10-4.

Mount Vernon Nazarene (6-3, 1-2 Heart) made things interesting late. The Cougars scored the final goal of the third period before scoring the first three of the fourth to pull to within 10-8 with 2:32 left. Shaddix immediately had the answer, taking a pass from Cortopassi and burying his fourth goal of the game just 25 seconds later to seal the win.

MNVU scored with 1:21 to play before SAU was able to run out the clock.

Shaddix and Cortopassi each finished with a five-point game to lead the Bees. Shaddix had four goals and one assist, giving him 101 career points (74 goals, 27 assists), while Cortopassi added a hat trick and a pair of assists. Isaiah Hahn scored two goals while Eli Hahn and Zach Priami each tallied a goal and an assist.

It was Priami's goal, coming off an Eli Hahn assist, that gave St. Ambrose a 1-0 lead not even 90 seconds into the game. Cortopassi's first goal increased the lead to 2-0 midway through the period. Mount Vernon scored four of the final five goals in the frame, including two just 10 seconds apart, to take its 4-3 lead, setting up SAU's rally.

Isaac Martinez came up big in goal, posting eight saves to earn the win.

Joe Campbell won eight faceoffs and picked up six ground balls. Priami also registered six ground balls. Eli Hahn and Trent Knight each had four, while Isaiah Hahn, Martinez, Dawson Dickerson and Sam Vita had three apiece. Vita also won five of his eight faceoffs.

The Bees, now 6-3 overall and 2-0 in Heart of America play, will host Augustana Wednesday.
