Five Bees earn Heart postseason honors

The Heart of America Athletic Conference announced post season honors for men’s lacrosse this afternoon. Five Bees were named to the all-conference first and second teams for the 2023-2024 season. Matt Cortopassi and Dawson Dickerson both notched first-team honors. While Eli Hahn, Isaiah Hahn, and Makaile Shaddix earned a spot on the second-team for all-conference awards.

The Heart of America named Gavin Flynn the 2023-24 Assistant Coach of the Year this afternoon. Flynn has been a familiar face in the St. Ambrose University men’s lacrosse program, having served as both a coach and a player.

The Statesmen were a familiar face to St. Ambrose as they played each other less than a month prior. They met again but this time in the 2024 Heart Tournament Semifinal match up. SAU was looking for revenge and an upset as they were the no. 3 seed heading into the conference tournament. William Penn was ranked no. 2 in the conference tournament, just behind Benedictine who earned the no. 1 seed. The Bees could not gather enough momentum for an upset this time around as St. Ambrose was defeated 26-5.

St. Ambrose (9-6,3-2) earned the no. 3 seed heading into the 2024 Heart Men’s Lacrosse Conference Tournament. The Bees are looking to defend their title as they won in 2023, beating William Penn 14-8.

The Bees improve to (9-6, 3-2) overall after their last regular season and conference matchup of the year at Clarke University. The Bees defeated the Pride 11-6 after a show start to the game, having only scored one goal in the first fifteen of action. This win helped SAU clinch the no. 3 seed heading into the Heart Conference Tournament.

St. Ambrose recognized ten seniors before their overtime win vs. Augustana College on Thursday night at St. Vincent’s Athletic Complex. This would be the rival game of the year for St. Ambrose men’s lacrosse and a meaningful one at that. Before the match SAU now (8-6, 2-2) overall, recognized nine athletes and one coach/manager. The athletes recognized were Joe Campbell, Matthew Cortopassi, Matthew David, Isaiah Hahn, Trentin Knight, Makaile Shaddix, Alex Tomaszewski, Sam Vita, and Tyler Yetka. Lastly, the men’s lacrosse program recognized coach/manager Joey Wyslak.

Coming off a tough conference loss, the Bees looked to rewrite the script for their Sunday afternoon game. Things looked promising as SAU held Ottawa to only two goals in the first period but could not capitalize on the offensive end in the first half. Therefore, the Bees dropped a game to Ottawa, 17-3.

St. Ambrose becomes (7-5, 2-2) overall after a 19-7 loss to Benedictine College on Friday evening in Atchison, Kan. This was a big conference game as it would likely determine which team would host or travel for the postseason tournament.

The Bees traveled to Fremont, Neb. Wednesday evening and held Midland to only 17 total shots on the evening. This stellar defensive performance routed a 14-1 victory for SAU as they improve to (7-4, 2-1).

The Bees hosted #4 William Penn for the first game of the doubleheader conference match on Saturday morning. SAU showed a promising performance but came up short. St. Ambrose stayed course with #4 William Penn for the first half but couldn't keep the pace with the Statesmen for the final 16-7.

Three Bees across both the men's and women's lacrosse programs at St. Ambrose University have rolled past a huge milestone. In their time at St. Ambrose, all have captured 100 career points between goals and assists. One women’s lacrosse player in Anabelle Brown and two men’s lacrosse players in Makaile Shaddix and Isaiah Hahn.

St. Ambrose scored seven straight goals over the second and third periods to defeat Mount Vernon Nazarene 11-9 Wednesday afternoon at St. Vincent's.

SAU continued their week-long Michigan trip by traveling to Beverly Hills, Mich. For their final matchup vs. the University of Michigan-Dearborn. The Bees scored the first two goals of the game and the last three goals of the game to edge Michigan-Dearborn 14-8. This was a much-needed game for the Bees who dropped two games earlier in the week.

As the Bees continued their spring break trip in Michigan, they played (RV) Madonna. It was a game of momentum and runs. The Crusaders had a few more runs than the Bees could muster up ultimately defeating them 8-13. This loss drops St. Ambrose to (4-3, 1-0) overall.

For Spring Break, the men’s lacrosse team headed north to Michigan to start their three game stint. (RV) Siena Heights proved to be a defensive matchup throughout with both teams forcing an overtime period.

St. Ambrose hosted the Vikings of Missouri Valley for their first conference match up of the year, edging the Vikings 23-1. The Bees scored 23 goals, a season high for the team in their first conference win.
