SAU wins on Senior Day over Benedictine

St. Ambrose honored nine seniors and defeated Benedictine College 19-11 Saturday afternoon at the St. Vincent's Athletic Complex in Davenport. Jacob Blair, Cole Danner, Dawson Dickerson, Patrick Flynn, Nolan Hayes, Dave Hertogs, Michael Keating, Michael Shakerin, and Dylan Witt were recognized before the regular season finale for their contributions to the men's lacrosse program.

Benedictine took an early 1-0 lead, but a goal from Matt Cortopassi tied it up, and then Isaiah Hahn put the Bees up for good with 11:51 left in the first. Hahn added another, and Keating found the back of the net to give SAU a 4-1 advantage with 10:44 to go. The Ravens cut into the lead, but Keating was able to find Joey Curzon and Tyler Yetka for scores to give St. Ambrose a 6-2 lead after one.

The Bees went on a three-goal run in the second quarter with all seniors scoring - Flynn, Keating, and Shakerin netted unassisted goals to give the home squad a 9-2 lead with 4:30 left until halftime. Benedictine would get one back, but Cortopassi found Keating with three seconds left for a 10-3 halftime advantage.

The Ravens got the first score of the third, but man-up goals from Cole Danner and Keating pushed the SAU lead to eight with 10:30 remaining in the quarter. A Benedictine goal at the 7:55 mark made it 12-5, but the Bees answered with goals from Shakerin and Blair for a 14-5 lead with 5:07 on the clock. The visitors went on a three-goal run to cut the lead to six with 2:36 to go, but Makaile Shaddix found Hahn late in the frame to give the Bees a 15-8 lead heading into the fourth.

Danner netted back-to-back goals to start the fourth to push the St. Ambrose lead to nine with 8:35 remaining. Benedictine scored two of their own to make it 17-10 with 6:43 on the clock. Ian Ban got on the score sheet to make an eight-goal game with 4:35, but the Ravens would net one more with 1:46 to go. Two seniors - Blair and Shakerin - combined for the final goal of the night to make it 19-11.

Keating finished with four goals and three assists to lead the Bees. Hayes made 12 saves in the win. Jack Wiltrout won 14 faceoffs and collected six ground balls. Dickerson collected five, and Lachlan Hodge picked up three. Adam Kraft and Edward Loggins each had a game-high three caused turnovers.

St. Ambrose was in a three-way tie for second place in the Heart after the win but will be the second seed in the conference tournament after the tiebreaker.

The Bees will host Mount Vernon Nazarene on Wednesday, April 26th at 7 p.m. SAU lost the regular season meeting 10-5 on March 4th.
