Late goals from Statesmen beat SAU

It was a low-scoring affair Saturday in Oskaloosa. St. Ambrose and William Penn went back and forth, but the Statesmen scored the final two goals of the game to take a 9-7 conference win.

After WP scored the first goal of the game, SAU got scores from Cole Danner, Matt Cortopassi, and Joe Campbell to take a 3-1 lead into the second.

The Statesmen cut the lead to one on a man-up goal in the second, but Makaile Shaddix found Lachlan Hodge to put the Bees up 4-2 with 12:39 until the break. William Penn notched two more goals in the period for a 4-4 halftime tie.

The teams traded goals to begin the third, with Ian Ban finding the back of the net for SAU. William Penn scored the next two to make it a 7-5 game with 9:01 left in the third. A goal from Isaiah Hahn made it a one-score game heading into the final quarter.

Hahn found Shaddix to start the fourth for a 7-7 tie with 13:22 to go, but William Penn netted the final two goals to take a 9-7 lead with 6:02 left. St. Ambrose got chances from Michael Keating and Michael Shakerin to cut into the lead, but their shots were off the mark, and WP walked away with the win.

Nolan Hayes made 15 saves in the loss. Jack Wiltrout won eight faceoffs. Keating and Chris Bridich caused a team-high two turnovers each.

Up next for the Bees is another conference contest. They will travel to Missouri Valley on Saturday, April 8th for a 6 p.m. start.
