St. Ambrose rolls past Clarke for first conference win

St. Ambrose dominated from start to finish and picked up their first Heart of America Conference win Tuesday night in Davenport. Ten different Bees scored on the way to an 18-4 victory over Clarke.

SAU was on it from the start as they scored the game's first 12 goals. Michael Shakerin got the goal-scoring started for the Bees, followed by two goals from Makaile Shaddix for a 3-0 lead with 8:20 left in the first. Goals from Shakerin, Patrick Flynn, and Lachlan Hodge gave St. Ambrose a 6-0 lead at the end of the first. SAU allowed just three shots by Clarke in the quarter.

Shakerin scored for the Bees to start the second on an assist from Joey Curzon. Five St. Ambrose goals followed with Shaddix, Isaiah Hahn, Tyler Yetka, Shaddix again, and Matt Cortopassi finding the back of the net to give SAU a 12-0 lead with 6:56 to go until the half. Clarke got on the board with 3:08 left on a man-up goal by Conner Cole to make it 12-1. Jacob Blair scored twice for SAU in the last thirty seconds, and the Pride found the back of the net as well for the 14-2 halftime score.

The St. Ambrose offense slowed down a bit in the second half, scoring four times in the final two quarters, highlighted by Nolan Hayes' score in the fourth quarter. Clarke scored twice in the second half as SAU limited them to six shots over the final 30 minutes for the 18-4 final.

Shaddix had a game-high five goals for St. Ambrose and added two assists. Shakerin had three goals and tied Michael Keating for a game-high with five assists. Keating also had a goal for the Bees. Blair and Yetka scored two, and Cortopassi, Flynn, Hahn, Hayes, and were the other scorers.

Jack Wiltrout won 18 faceoffs and collected a game-high 16 ground balls. Cole Danner and Hodge each collected five. Sam Vita was credited with one faceoff victory. On the defensive end, Chris Bridich, Joe Campbell, Trent Knight, and Adam Kraft each caused one turnover with SAU causing 12 in the game. Hayes made three saves in net to go with his fourth-quarter score, and Isaac Martinez made one save.

St. Ambrose will travel to William Penn on Saturday, April 1st for another Heart of America matchup.
