St. Ambrose wins home opener over Madonna

After six games on the road to start the season, St. Ambrose men's lacrosse finally got to come home. The Bees were in a battle throughout Friday afternoon at the St. Vincent's Athletic Complex. SAU scored three times in the final quarter to push past Madonna, 10-8.

Tied 7-7 heading into the fourth, Michael Shakerin scored with 8:33 on the clock to put the Bees ahead by one. After a faceoff win by Jack Wiltrout, Tyler Yetka put one in the back of the net to give St. Ambrose a 9-7 lead with 7:58 to go. SAU would score once more in the period, when Cole Danner found Isaiah Hahn to put the Bees up three with 6:46 remaining. Madonna would get one back with 3:28 on the clock to make it 10-8, but Nolan Hayes made five saves in the last three minutes to close out the win.

The visitors jumped out to an early 2-0 lead before Hahn got the Bees on the board with 8:21 left in the first quarter. Two more goals from Madonna followed before Shakerin found Yetka to make it 4-2 Crusaders heading into the second.

The script was flipped in the second. After a quick score from the Crusaders, SAU went on a four-goal run with scores from Hahn, Yetka, Matt Cortopassi, and Alex Tomaszewski to take a 6-5 lead with 4:19 until halftime. Madonna would score with five seconds remaining for the 6-6 score at the break.

Both teams scored in the third to make it 7-7, leading to the three-goal run for St. Ambrose in the fourth quarter.

Yetka led the way for SAU with four goals, followed by Hahn with three. Michael Keating had two assists. Hayes was credited with 12 saves in the victory. Cortopassi and Wiltrout each collected six ground balls.

The Bees will be back at home tomorrow, March 11th, to take on the Midland Warriors at 3 p.m.
