Bees beaten by Ravens in KCAC championship

St. Ambrose got as close as two goals three times in the fourth quarter but would not get any closer as Benedictine claimed the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) title by a score of 10-8 Saturday afternoon at Legacy Field in Atchison, Kansas. The Bees were held to their lowest offensive output and committed 29 turnovers, the most in a game this season.

Down 7-4 heading into the fourth quarter, Michael Shakerin found Cole Danner just 30 seconds into the period to cut the deficit to two. A goal from Benedictine's Brady Guck just a minute later pushed the Ravens' lead back to three. Danner found the back of the net for the Bees with 12:51 left in the game to make it an 8-6 game, but Benedictine scored two in a row to take a 10-6 lead with just over five minutes left. Shakerin got one past the keeper with 4:23 to go to make it a three-score game, and Michael Keating netted one with 1:23 remaining to make it 10-8, but the Ravens would hold on for the win.

Benedictine got the scoring started with a goal from James Carson to take an early 1-0 lead. Sam Kerr put the Bees on the board with 9:59 remaining in the first quarter to tie the game at one. Brady Guck put the Ravens back up one with a score at 7:57, but Kerr found the back of the net just 30 seconds later to make it 2-2. Benedictine would get two scores from Michael Hogan to close out the period to take a 4-2 lead heading into the second quarter.

Scoring was hard to come by for both teams in the period. Benedictine scored with 12:32 to go until halftime to take a three-goal lead. SAU scored late in the quarter on a goal from Dimaano to head into halftime down 5-3.

The St. Ambrose offense was quiet coming out of the break as the Bees wouldn't score until 18 seconds left in the period. Brady Guck put the Ravens up three, scoring with 11:42 left in the quarter. Nolan Hayes kept the Bees within striking distance, making five saves in the quarter. Shakerin would make it 6-4 with 18 seconds left, but Guck scored with 10 seconds left to give the Ravens a 7-4 lead heading into the final quarter.

Hayes finished with 14 saves in the loss. Shakerin and Kerr had two goals and two assists each, Danner finished with two goals, and Dimaano and Keating each added one. Benedictine's Brady Guck finished with a game-high four goals. Hunter Northway went 10-19 on faceoffs, while Jack Wiltrout went 2-3. Dylan Witt had a team-high seven ground balls to go along with his game-high four caused turnovers. Northway picked up five ground balls, followed by Shakerin with four. Danner and Hayden Latham scooped up three.

The Bees have been in the top seven in the NAIA all season and should get an at-large bid to the NAIA Invitational, but will have to wait to see where they land in the bracket.
