Third quarter surge helps Bees past Pride

St. Ambrose used a third-quarter push Tuesday night in Dubuque to get past the Clarke Pride, 24-7. With the win, SAU claimed the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference regular-season title - a first in program history. The Bees went 10-0 in conference play and locked up the No.1 seed in the conference tournament. 

With the lead just 7-4 at halftime, the Bees turned in on in the third quarter, scoring 12 unanswered in the quarter. Michael Shakerin scored for SAU to start the quarter, followed by scores from Michael Keating and Makaile Shaddix both off assists from Christian DimaanoIsaiah Hahn found Keating for the next goal, and Dimaano teamed up with Shakerin to make it 12-4 with 6:44 remaining in the quarter. Hunter Northway won the ensuing faceoff and found Dimaano for another Bee goal. Northway did the same thing again, this time finding Shaddix to make it 14-4 with 6:31 to go. Scores from Sam Kerr, Dimaano, Hahn, and Cole Danner made it 18-4 with 1:06 left in the frame. Shaddix put an exclamation on the quarter, finding the back of the net with two seconds left. 

Clarke scored the first two goals of the fourth quarter to make it 19-6 with 10:12 left in the game. SAU scored the next four, including three-straight man-up goals. Shakerin, Dimaano, Kerr, and Danner made it 23-6 with 4:30 to go. Each team would net one more to account for the final, with Shaddix netting the last goal. 

The Pride took an early 1-0 lead on a goal from Connor Cole. It wouldn't take long for the Bees to respond as Kerr tied the game at one just thirty seconds later. Goals from Alex Tomaszewski, Dimanno (from Latham), Shaddix, and Shakerin followed to give St. Ambrose a 5-1 lead heading into the second quarter. 

Clarke would get within two after two goals from Cole to start the second, making it 5-3 with 8:14 left until halftime. Keating scored a man-down goal to get the lead back to three, and a goal from Shakerin made it 7-3 with 4:27 to go. The Pride would get a late goal from Kurt Springli to bring the score to 7-4, leading to the Bee third-quarter goal run. 

Shaddix and Shakerin finished with a game-high five goals each, followed by Dimaano with four. Kerr and Keating each had three. Dimaano also had a game-high four assists. Northway went 31-32 in faceoffs, collecting 15 ground balls. Hayden Latham picked up 10 ground balls and caused two turnovers. Gavin Flynn also caused two, while Adam Kraft led the way with three. Johnny Moran made three saves in the first three quarters, and Isaac Martinez recorded two in the fourth quarter. 

St. Ambrose will face the winner of William Penn/Columbia on Thursday, April 21st at 4 p.m. in Atchison, Kansas at Legacy Field.
