Defense dominates in win over Missouri Valley

The St. Ambrose defense dominated Friday afternoon against Missouri Valley. The Bees allowed just 11 shots by the Vikings and caused 10 turnovers on their way to a 17-2 conference victory. SAU remains undefeated in the KCAC at 6-0, while Missouri Valley is now 1-5 overall and in the KCAC. 

Sam Kerr scored the first goal for St. Ambrose off a feed from Christian Dimaano to put the Bees up 1-0 just over a minute into the match. SAU wouldn't get on the board again until four minutes later when Matt Cortopassi found Hayden Latham for the score. St. Ambrose would get one more goal in the first quarter as Cole Danner found the back of the net to give the Bees a 3-0 lead heading into the second period. 

Jacob Blair found Kerr to start the second to make it 4-0 SAU with 14:21 left until the half. Edward Loggins put one in the net for the Bees, and another goal from Kerr made it 6-0 with 8:04 to go in the quarter. Missouri Valley got on the scoreboard with a goal from Cole Eyckelhoff, but Latham scored just 10 seconds later to make it 7-1. SAU would get goals from Blair and Isaiah Hahn to close out the period and take a 9-1 halftime lead. 

St. Ambrose went on another three-goal run to open up the second half. Goals from Michael Keating, Cortopassi, and Hahn gave SAU a 12-1 lead with 8:11 left in the third quarter. Cole Eyckelhoff would find the back of the net again for the Vikings, but the Bees rattled off another three-goal run to close out the frame, getting scores from Ian Ban, Cortopassi, and Cameron Daugherty-Giampaolo

Scoring was few in the fourth quarter, but Michael Shakerin produced another highlight-reel goal, going behind-the-back for the score and a 16-2 lead with 14:06 left in the game. Hahn would get the final goal, giving him three on the day. 

Nolan Hayes made four saves for St. Ambrose in the first half. Lachlan Hodges and Isaac Martinez each played a quarter in the second half with Hodges making one save, and Martinez one. Dylan Witt and Latham each caused three turnovers, and Joe Campbell caused two. Hunter Northway once again dominated faceoffs going 16-20 and picking up 13 ground balls, and Jack Wiltrout won all three of his faceoffs. 

Kerr and Hahn both finished with a hat trick, followed by Cortopassi and Latham with two each. Blair, Cortopassi, Danner, and Dimaano each had two assists for St. Ambrose. SAU outshot Missouri Valley 64-11 and had just 15 turnovers compared to the Vikings' 33. 

St. Ambrose will honor their seniors against St. Mary on Saturday at 5 p.m. in the regular-season home finale.
