St. Ambrose gets ranked road win over No. 8 Benedictine

Playing away from home for the first time since mid-February, St. Ambrose got off to a hot start and put up a solid defensive effort Friday night against No. 8 Benedictine College. The Bees would get a ranked road win, defeating the Ravens 10-5 at Legacy Field in Atchison, Kansas. St. Ambrose is now 9-0 overall and 5-0 in the KCAC, while Benedictine drops to 4-4 overall and 4-1 in the conference.

Michael Keating got the scoring started for SAU off an assist from Cole Danner with 11:47 to go in the first quarter for the 1-0 lead. A penalty called on Nolan Hayes threw Johnny Moran into the net for St. Ambrose, and Moran was up to the challenge making a save on Brady Guck during his short stint in goal. The home team tried to tie the game up at one, but Hayes was back in goal and stopped three-straight shot attempts to keep the Bees in the lead. St. Ambrose would get on the board again late in the quarter with Michael Shakerin finding Makalie Shaddix for a man-down goal and a 2-0 lead with 2:59 remaining. Just 40 seconds later, Shakerin would get a goal of his own for a three-goal lead. SAU would add one more before the end of the first frame, with Shaddix netting his second of the night off an assist from Sam Kerr for a 4-0 lead heading into the second.

The Ravens would strike first in the second frame, getting a goal from Michael Hogan with 13:29 until halftime. The Bees would go on a three-goal run with Danner (from Shakerin), Christian Dimaano, and Dawson Dickerson (from Shakerin) finding the back of the net for a 7-1 score with 4:13 to go in the period. The Ravens closed out the quarter with a two-goal run to make it 7-3 at the break.

Scoring was hard to come by in the third, with each team scoring just once in the quarter. Jordan Rodriguez scored for the Ravens to make it 7-4 with 6:27 left in the period, but Dimaano got his second of the day off a feed from Danner for an 8-4 SAU lead heading into the fourth.

Kerr made a tremendous individual effort in the final frame to put the Bees up by five. Kerr caused a turnover in the defensive end, picked up the ground ball, raced down the field, and rocked a shot past the goalie to make it 9-4 with 12:28 left in the game. Shakerin would score his second of the day on an assist from Isiah Hahn for the 10-4 lead. Benedictine would add a score late to account for the final tally.

Hayes made 17 saves in goal, and Moran had one. Three Bees scored twice in the win - Dimaano, Shakerin, and Shaddix. Danner, Dickerson, Kerr, and Keating were the other goal scorers. Shakerin had a game-high three assists, Danner had two, and Hahn and Keating each had one. Hunter Northway went 10-17 on faceoffs, and Jack Wiltrout went 1-2. St. Ambrose caused 11 total turnovers with Kerr causing a game-high four followed by Hayden LathamDylan Witt, and Dickerson with two.

SAU will face RV Ottawa University on Saturday at 4 p.m. in Ottawa for another KCAC contest.
