St. Ambrose stays perfect with victory over No. 6 Aquinas

Sam Kerr scored a game-high five goals, and St. Ambrose never trailed in a ranked matchup Monday afternoon in Davenport. The Bees took down No. 6 Aquinas College, 16-13, at the St. Vincent's Athletic complex to remain undefeated on the season. The Saints drop to 2-2.

The game was tightly contested throughout, and the teams exploded for a combined 11 goals in the second quarter. With the game tied at 4-4 at 8:07 in the second, SAU got the momentum. Michael Shakerin found Cameron Daugherty-Giampaolo to give the Bees a one-goal lead with 6:58 left until half. Just a minute later, it was Shakerin finding the back of the net off a pass from Michael Keating for a man-up score. Matt Cortopassi was the next scorer for St. Ambrose, and on the ensuing faceoff, Hunter Northway scooped up the ground ball and put a shot past the goalie for an 8-4 lead with 4:22 to go. Aquinas' Kevin LaHaie matched what Northway did, collecting the ground ball from the faceoff and scoring to get a goal back for the visitors. After another score for the Saints, Christian Dimaano found Makaile Shaddix to give SAU a three-goal lead with just under two minutes until half, but LaHaie would score again for Aquinas to make it 9-7 at the half.

Nolan Hayes was stellar coming out of the break, making 10 of his 16 saves in the third quarter. Hayes saved three shot attempts from the Saints to start the period. Kerr netted a hat trick with 10 minutes remaining in the quarter. Jack Wiltrout then teamed with Shaddix for a man-down goal to give St. Ambrose an 11-7 lead with 7:24 left in the frame. Aquinas found the back of the net with just over a minute to go in the quarter, but Shaddix found Hayden Latham with 39 seconds left to give the Bees a four-goal lead heading into the fourth.

The fourth quarter saw scoring runs for each team, with Aquinas' Mitch Haggart netting the first two goals of the quarter to make it a two-score game. But Kerr answered with two goals of his own and Keating (from Cole Danner) got one to make it 15-10 with 7:59 left. The Saints scored three straight of their own to cut the lead to two with 5:20 left, but Keating scored his third of the day with 2:39 to go as the Bees would hold on for the 16-13 win.

Kerr started the scoring in the first, with Isaiah Hahn following soon after to give SAU an early 2-0 lead. Kerr (from Latham) would score between goals from Aquinas to give St. Ambrose a 3-2 lead heading into the second quarter. The visitors tied the game up at three on a man-up goal, but Keating scored to give SAU the lead back until Aquinas tied it up again with 8:07 left in the half.

Shakerin had a game-high four assists. Northway went 10-19 on faceoffs to go along with his one goal, and Latham had a game-high four caused turnovers while Dylan Witt had three.

St. Ambrose will face yet another ranked opponent as they travel to Benedictine College to take on the No. 7 Ravens on Friday, March 25th at 7 p.m. The Bees will then take on RV Ottawa University on Saturday, March 26th at 4 p.m.
