Bees get conference win over Statesmen

Playing for the first time in two-and-a-half weeks, St. Ambrose got a conference victory over William Penn Wednesday night in their home opener, defeating the Statesmen, 14-7, in Davenport at the St. Vincent's Athletic Complex.

After a Boston Romero goal for William Penn to start the game, SAU got two goals from Cole Danner and one from Michael Shakerin for a 3-1 lead going into the second quarter.

The Bees scored just nine seconds into the period as Sam Kerr found Michael Keating for the man-up goal to make it 4-1 St. Ambrose. William Penn notched the next two goals to cut the SAU lead to one. Shakerin made it 5-3 with 3:29 left until halftime, but WPU's Tim Pennington answered back with a goal. Isaiah Hahn teamed up with Keating for the final goal of the half to give SAU a 6-4 lead at the break.

St. Ambrose turned it on after halftime, going on a 4-0 scoring run in the third to take a 10-4 lead with 5:49 remaining in the quarter. Tim Pennington got another goal for the visitors to cut the lead to five, but Christian Dimaano pushed the lead back to six on a goal with 3:29 left. SAU would take an 11-5 lead into the final frame.

The teams traded goals in the fourth, with Dimaano putting an exclamation on the night - scoring with four seconds left to close out the victory.

Danner finished with a game-high five goals. Keating and Shakerin each had three, Dimaano added two, and Makaile Shaddix got one. Nolan Hayes made 20 saves in goal for the Bees, and Hunter Northway went 12-19 on faceoffs.
