St. Ambrose falls in KCAC championship

Columbia College had too much offensive firepower as they claimed the KCAC title from St. Ambrose on Saturday afternoon. The Bees (13-3) could not keep up with the Cougars (14-0) as they ran away with a 16-6 victory at Legacy Field in Atchison, Kan.

Columbia scored the first goal just over five minutes into the game as Tyler Parrott found the back of the net. The Cougars would add two more goals in the first to take a 3-0 lead with 2:50 remaining. The Bees were able to cut into the lead with 17 seconds left in the quarter as Matt Madril got on the scoresheet.

The teams traded goals in the second, with Cooper Heck scoring for the Cougars just two minutes into the period to go up 4-1. SAU was able to cut the deficit in half with 10:55 to go as Michael Shakerin found Christian Dimaano for the score. Columbia would get a goal back from Derek Howard as they would take a three-goal lead into the half.

Coming out of the half, the Cougars would add two goals in less than three minutes to take a 7-2 lead. Hayden Latham was able to cause a turnover and then find Sam Kerr for an SAU goal with 9:57 left in the third quarter. Less than two minutes later, Columbia would tally another goal for the 8-3 lead. The Bees had chances from Cole Danner, Isaiah Hahn, and Shakerin to get on the board, but the attempts went wide or were saved. The Cougars would score late in the third quarter to take a 9-3 lead into the final frame.

St. Ambrose finally found some offense in the fourth quarter, scoring the first two goals of the period. Danner found Michael Keating for a score, and then the two teamed up again, this time Danner finding the back of the net with 12:13 remaining and down 5-9. Columbia would get their 10th goal of the afternoon from Trevor Doren to take a five-goal lead. Dimaano got on the scoresheet again for the Bees with 10:24 to go after the pass from Hunter Northway. The Cougars would go on to score the final six goals to take the game, 16-6.

Shakerin finished with nine shots, Danner had seven, and Justin O'Marrah and Hahn each finished with six shots. Dimaano led the Bees in goals with two. Trevor Doren had six for the Cougars. Northway won 12 of 16 faceoffs, and Nolan Hayes made 17 saves in the loss.

SAU will wait to see where they will be seeded in the NAIA Men's Lacrosse Invitational. The Invitational takes place May 5th through the 8th in Savannah, Georgia.
