Five Bees finish in top 10 at Viking Invite

In the final regular-season event of the year, St. Ambrose placed five players inside the top 10 at the Viking Invitational played at Highland Springs in Rock Island, Ill., Friday and Saturday.

The five Bees were bunched within three shots of each other to help the team to a runner-up finish in the six-team tournament.

Jacob Lange was the top finisher, placing fourth with rounds of 72 and 76 for a 148. Three Bees ended in a tie for fifth place. Vinny Messana and Hunter Mettille each started with a 77 Friday before coming back with 72s Saturday for matching 149s. Jacob Rude opened with a 73 before a 76 also gave him a 149. Mark Schomer carded consecutive 75s to finish in a tie for 10th with a 150.

SAU fired a pair of sub-300 rounds, shooting a first-round 297 before closing with a 295. The 592 was good for second behind Augustana's 583 (287-296).

Nathan Unes led a second St. Ambrose team with a 157. He had rounds of 77 and 80. Frank Barges (79-86=165), Luke Haedt (86-79=165), T.J. McDonnell (82-85=167) and Luke Siebers (84-87=171) also competed for the second team. The Bees finished sixth with a 652 (322-330).

Augustana's Vilhelm Johansson was individual medalist with a 146 (77-69).

SAU will next compete in the two-day, three-round CCAC Championships Monday and Tuesday at Cinder Ridge Golf Course in Wilmington, Ill.
