Hultman earns top-five finish at Verhille Invite
Owen Hultman tied for fifth place with a 5-over 149 at the Verhile Invitational played at Finkbine Golf Course in Iowa City, Iowa, Tuesday and Wednesday.
Hultman opened with a 2-over 74 before closing the tournament with a 3-over 75 Wednesday. That left him in a two-way tie for fifth, just two shots behind the event runners-up. Gabe Escalera, from Hastings, was individual medalist with a 1-under 143 (72-71).
Jacob Stoetzel matched Hultman with a second-round 75. That followed a 77 that gave him a 152 total, good for 12th overall. Dylan McAleer carded a 76 before slipping with an 81 for hist 157. Tim Marcum shot a 159 (79-80) and Jacob Rude came in with a 164 (81-83).
St. Ambrose finished fourth in the 12-team event. SAU had rounds of 306 and 311 for a 617. Park won the team title with a 598 (302-296).
Carsen Theis led a second SAU team with a 6-over 150. He fired the Bees' best round of the tournament, a 1-under 71 Tuesday. He finished with a 79 for a 150 and a tie for seventh place.
Hunter Mettille (78-80=158), Colin Riggs (78-84=162), Mark Schomer (81-81=162) and Jacob Lange (84-85=169) also competed for the SAU B team that finished eighth with a 632 (308-324).
The Bees will compete in the Black Hawk Fyre Lake Invite in Sherrard, Ill., next Monday.
