Stoetzel leads St. Ambrose at Duhawk Invitational

Behind Jacob Stoetzel's runner-up finish, St. Ambrose took sixth place at the Loras Duhawk Spring Invitational played at The Meadows in Asbury, Iowa, Sunday and Monday.

Stoetzel carded back-to-back rounds of 73 to finish second overall with a 2-over 146 for the tournament. Dubuque's Carter Ruegsegger won medalist honors with a 3-under 141.

Stoetzel's four teammates each climbed the leaderboard during the final round.

Dylan McAleer opened with an 81 Sunday before coming in with a 77 Monday for a 158, good for a share of 27th place. Tim Marcum also started with an 81 before closing with a 78 for his 159. Jacob Rude made the biggest move, following his 83 with a 76 to match Marcum with a 159. Owen Hultman had rounds of 83 and 79 for a 162.

Thanks to the improved scores, St. Ambrose was able to climb two spots as a team, finishing in sixth place in the 13-team event. SAU shot an opening-round 318 before finishing with a 304 for a 622 total. Dubuque won the team title with a 597 (303-294).

Colin Riggs led a second St. Ambrose team to a ninth-place finish with a 632 (320-312). Riggs joined Stoetzel as the only Bee to shoot both rounds in the 70s. He had rounds of 79 and 75 for a 154 to tie for 15th. Carsen Theis shot a 158 (75-83), Hunter Mettille had a 159 (80-79), Jacob Lange carded a 165 (86-79) and Mark Schomer finished with a 170 (91-79).

SAU returns to action Tuesday and Wednesday at the Verhille Invitational at Finkbine in Iowa City, Iowa.
