McAleer earns medalist honors at SAU golf tryouts

Dylan McAleer, a junior from DeWitt, Iowa, captured medalist honors at this season's St. Ambrose Golf Qualifying Tournament. The event was held Aug. 14-17 at Emeis Golf Course in Davenport, with 24 players trying out for 20 spots on varsity and JV rosters. McAleer finished last season's qualifying tournament just a single stroke behind medalist Owen Hultman.

This season, McAleer started hot with rounds of 71 and 68 to reach 5-under par at the halfway point. He added rounds of 75 and 72 for a four-day total of 286 (2-under par), which was good enough for a five-shot margin of victory. Hultman, a senior and last year's medalist, finished as runner-up with a four-day total of 291 (+3). Freshman Jacob Stoetzel finished third at +6. He led a strong incoming class of eight freshmen by parlaying back-to-back even-par rounds of 72 to finish his event. Jacob Rude (+9) had the best final round, a 2-under 70 to leap from seventh place into fourth, with Tim Marcum (+10) earning the final varsity spot for the season-opening event.

The top 20 players earned spots on the 2023-24 roster, with there being a tie for 20th place. That deadlock occurred between Chase Mason and Hayden Lee, with both men playing their way onto the SAU roster for the first time in their golf careers.

St. Ambrose will compete in its first tournament of the season Sept 1-2 in the Augustana Invitational at Highland Springs Golf Course in Rock Island, Ill. The top five players from this week's qualifying tournament will represent SAU's varsity squad, with the next 15 earning places on JV1, JV2 and JV3 teams. Scores from the invitational for all 20 players will be added to their four rounds from the qualifying tournament, and those six-round aggregate totals will determine roster spots for the next event the following weekend in Marion, Iowa, in which the top 10 SAU players will compete.

Head Coach Jeff Griebel is entering his 42nd season at the helm of St. Ambrose.
