Tigges ties for third at The Verhille Invitational

Jared Tigges tied for third to lead St. Ambrose at The Verhille Invitational played at Finkbine Golf Course in Iowa City, Iowa, Tuesday and Wednesday.

Tigges fired an even-par 72 to begin play that backed that up with a 75 to finish with a 3-over 147. He was the only Bee to shoot both rounds in the 70s.

Despite the 72, SAU got off to a slow start Tuesday, shooting a 316 to sit in a tie for eighth place in the 14-team field. But the Bees picked it up Wednesday, firing a 305 to climb into sixth, just a shot behind Culver-Stockton. St. Ambrose finished with a 621 (316-305).

Owen Hultman shot rounds of 80 and 76 for a 156 to tie for 23rd individually. Dylan McAleer made a big day-two move. After shooting a first-day 86, McAleer matched Tigges with the team's low round of the tournament, carding a 72. That left him with a 158 total.

Hunter Mettille started with a 78 before slipping with an 82 Wednesday. He totaled a 160. Mark Schomer (86-83) shot a 169.

Jacob Rude led a second SAU team with a 158. He had rounds of 77 and 81. Justin Endthoff had back-to-back 81s for his 162. Tim Marcum (79-83) also finished with a 162. Reid Calvert (83-82=165) and Drew Eden (90-83=173) also competed for the second team. That group finished 12th with a 647 (320-327).

Kirkwood won the team title, shooting an 8-over 584 (288-296). And Kirkwood's Grant Greazel was individual medalist with a 1-under 143 (71-72).

St. Ambrose will compete in the CCAC Championships at Cinder Ridge Golf Course in Wilmington, Ill., next Monday and Tuesday.
