Hultman earns top-10 finish at Midwest Invitational

Battling tough conditions at TPC Deere Run Monday and Tuesday, Owen Hultman pieced together a top-10 finish at the St. Ambrose-hosted NAIA Midwest Invitational. Hultman was the lone Bee to shoot a pair of rounds in the 70s. He opened with a 77 before finishing with a 3-over 74 for his 151 to earn a tie for 10th place.

Hultman was one of four Bees to improve his score Tuesday. Hunter Mettille fired a second-round 78 to climb inside the top 30. He finished with a 159 (81-78). Dylan McAleer and Jared Tigges tied with 162s. McAleer carded rounds of 83 and 79 while Tigges registered back-to-back rounds of 81. Mark Schomer made the biggest improvement, coming in with an 80 after starting with an 86 for a 166.

The second-day improvement helped St. Ambrose climb a spot in the final standings. SAU had rounds of 322 and 311 for a 633 to finish eighth in the 18-team event.

A second St. Ambrose team finished 13th. Jacob Rude led that team with consecutive rounds of 81 for a 162. Reid Calvert was a shot back with a 163 (82-81). Tim Marcum, Drew Eden and Justin Endthoff also competed for the SAU B team that came in with a 658.

A third Bee team ended 18th. That group consisted of Luke Haedt, T.J. McDonnell, Colin Riggs, Evan Baxter, Nathan Unes and Luke Siebers.

Mount Mercy's Johan Wigertz claimed individual medalist honors by eight shots. He fired a 5-under 66 Monday before closing the tournament with a 1-over 72 for a 4-under 138. Wigertz also led Mount Mercy (300-293=593) to the team title.

St. Ambrose will next compete in the Central College Fall Classic Oct. 3-4 at Finkbine Golf Course in Iowa City, Iowa.
