Top round at TPC Deere Run moves Bees up leaderboard

A 287, the team's best round ever at TPC Deere Run, helped St. Ambrose climb into a fifth-place finish at the Deere Run Invitational played in Silvis, Ill., Friday and Saturday. The Bees' 3-over 287 was the best overall round of the 19-team, two-day tournament. 

Four of the five Bees made significant climbs up the leaderboard Saturday.

Mick Haverland followed his first-round 77 with a closing 1-under 70 to end in a tie for seventh place with a 147. Dylan McAleer also started with a 77. He fired a second-day 1-over 72 to end in 15th place with a 149.

Eric Spurgetis shot a 2-over 73 Saturday after beginning play with an 81. He finished with a 154. Jared Tigges made the biggest move. After carding an 85, he bounced back with a 1-over 72 for a 157. Owen Hultman was the Bees' most consistent golfer, shooting rounds of 76 and 78 to match Spurgetis with a 154.

SAU entered Saturday in a tie for ninth after a first-day 311. The Bees finished fifth with a 598. Southeastern won with a 589 while Morningside (595), Northwestern Ohio (596) and host Lawrence Tech (597) rounded out the top four. Doane's Micah Ramirez was the individual medalist with a 1-under 141 (72-69).

St. Ambrose had two other teams compete in the Augustana Invitational at Highland Springs in Rock Island, Ill., over the weekend. 

Ethan Neumer led one team with rounds of 78 and 76 for a 154. He was joined by Hunter Mettille (157), Reid Calvert (166), Josh Vanderploeg (170) and Gabe Ferlmann (182). That group finished 22nd in the 25-team event with a 647 (332-315).

The second Bee team finished 25th with a 684 (353-331). Drew Eden led the way with a 167. Nathan Unes (169), Luke Siebers (170) and Evan Baxter (178) also competed.

Webster, led by individual medalist Will Hocker's 7-under 137, won the tournament with a 584.

St. Ambrose will take a bit of a break before competing in the Mount Mercy Spring Shootout at Finkbine Golf Course in Iowa City, Iowa, Apr. 21.
