Spurgetis and Mettille lead Bees at Clarke Invite

Eric Spurgetis edged teammate Hunter Mettille on a third playoff hole to claim medalist honors at the Clarke Spring Invitational played at the Galena Golf Club in Galena, Ill., Tuesday. The two Bees were part of a three-way tie atop the leaderboard with 73s.

Spurgetis led St. Ambrose to the team title with a 301, eight shots better than second-place Blackhawk. It marked the first tournament win of the year for the Bees, who claimed second-place finishes at the Clarke Fall Invitational and the CCAC Cup in the fall.

Owen Hultman and Jared Tigges each shot a 75 to tie for sixth place. Mick Haverland and Dylan McAleer shot matching 78s to tie for 15th.

Mettille led a second SAU team to 10th place in the 14-team event with a 331.

His teammates were bunched together. Josh Vanderploeg carded an 85, Reid Calvert fired an 86, T.J. McDonnell shot an 87 and Gabe Ferlmann came in with an 89.

Evan Baxter and Nathan Unes each shot an 89 playing as individuals for the Bees.

St. Ambrose will compete in a pair of events to close the week. A group will compete in the TPC Deere Run Invitational in Silvis, Ill., while others will play in the Augustana Invitational at Highland Springs in Rock Island, Ill. Both events run Friday and Saturday.
