Spurgetis ties for third at Central Fall Classic

Spurgetis ties for third at Central Fall Classic

Eric Spurgetis tied for third overall at the Central Fall Classic played at Finkbine Golf Course in Iowa City, Iowa, Monday and Tuesday. His 155 total left him just a shot out of a runner-up finish.

Spurgetis was the only Bee to fire two rounds in the 70s. He opened with a 78 before following that with a 77 Tuesday. His final round helped him climb from ninth to the tie for third.

While Spurgetis was the top SAU individual, it was the St. Ambrose B team, led by Dylan McAleer, that had the better finish.

McAleer shot back-to-back 80s to finish with a 160, good for a sixth-place tie. Jared Tigges narrowly missed a top-10 finish, after rounds of 78 and 83 left him with a 161 and a tie for 11th.

Mark Schomer shot an 83 and came back with an 85 for a 168. Reid Calvert (90-86) finished with a 176.

Ethan Neumer shot a first-round 79 but did not play in Tuesday's round.

Those five helped the SAU B team take fifth place. They shot a 654 total (320-334).

Mick Haverland carded the team's best round of the tournament as his 76 Monday put him in a tie for fourth place. He did not play Tuesday.

Spurgetis and Haverland were joined by McGwire Eden (81-89) and Owen Hultman (85-85), who each finished with a 170. Hunter Mettille came in with a 175 (89-86).

After sitting in second after a 320 in round one, the St. Ambrose A team took sixth with a 657.

Central College's Matt Briggs ran away with individual medalist honors. He shot an even-par 72 before finishing with a 74 for a 2-over 146. He led the Dutch to the team title as Central shot a 627 (311-316).

The Bees will next compete in the Quad City Collegiate at Crow Valley Country Club in Bettendorf, Iowa, Monday.
