Late first-half run lifts No. 11 Roosevelt past St. Ambrose

The last seven minutes of the first half proved to be the difference as St. Ambrose fell to No. 11 Roosevelt 91-65 Wednesday night in Lee Lohman Arena.

The Bees got an early jump on the nationally-ranked Lakers, building a five-point lead in the game's first five minutes. The SAU lead was still at four points at 23-19 following an Atem Agot layup. After an RU run, Agot buried a jumper to keep SAU within 30-27 with seven minutes left in the half.

Then it all fell apart.

St. Ambrose (12-13, 9-8 CCAC) missed its final eight shots of the half and committed three turnovers as Roosevelt (21-3, 16-1 CCAC) went on a 21-1 run to take a 51-28 halftime lead. The lone Bee point over the final seven minutes of the half was an Agot free throw.

SAU tried to climb back into the game, outscoring RU 7-2 to start the second half to get within 53-35. But the Lakers answered with back-to-back threes as part of an 8-0 spurt, and the margin never got under 20 the rest of the way.

Roosevelt shot better than 50 percent from the floor (34-of-67), hit exactly half of its 3-point attempts (12-of-24) and shot nearly 92 percent from the line (11-of-12). St. Ambrose finished at less than 40 percent from the floor (25-of-63).

Will Spriggs led three Bees in double figures with 14 points. Agot and Grant Mason each scored 13. Ignacio Dacunda came off the bench to contribute six points. Jake Friel and Collin Wainscott each netted five, Guillermo Narbona scored four, Nikola Zelenovic finished with three and Max Steiner added two.

Narbona led the team with nine rebounds and three assists. Nathan Moeller also handed out three assists.

St. Ambrose will host Indiana Northwest Saturday on Senior Day.
