Bees can't overcome shooting struggles

A furious comeback came up short as St. Ambrose fell at Judson 81-71 Saturday afternoon. SAU shot less than 39 percent from the floor in dropping its third straight game.

The Bees attempted 14 more shots than the Eagles (70-56) but made only 27 while Judson knocked down 28 attempts.

The offensive struggles started early. St. Ambrose (11-11, 8-6 CCAC) shot just 28 percent (9-of-32), including a 1-of-15 effort from 3-point range, in the first half. Judson (10-12, 7-7 CCAC) led 39-24 at the break.

The shooting woes carried over to the start of the second half. SAU made just five of its first 18 shots of the half as Judson opened up a 63-38 lead.

But then St. Ambrose came to life. Collin Wainscott hit back-to-back threes to get the deficit to single digits at 67-58. Ignacio Dacunda followed with a tip-in, Guillermo Narbona made a layup and Atem Agot drilled a 3-pointer to cap a 27-4 run to pull SAU to within 67-65 with 3:28 left.

The Bees had a chance to tie but Narbona missed in the lane and the Eagles followed with a 10-point run to rebuild a 77-65 lead with less than a minute remaining.

Wainscott and Elgin Bowen Jr. made late threes but Judson did enough from the line to seal the win.

Wainscott hit five triples in scoring a team-best 15 points. Dacunda was the only other Bee to score in double figures, finishing with 12.

Jake Friel finished with nine points and three Bees - Narbona, Agot and Will Spriggs - each scored eight. Bowen had five while Nathan Moeller, Grant Mason and Ryan Kenney scored two apiece.

SAU will look to snap its skid Wednesday at Governors State.
