Late 3-pointer sinks St. Ambrose

On a day Holy Cross seemingly couldn't miss from 3-point range, it was a 3-pointer in the closing seconds that sent St. Ambrose to a 94-91 loss in Notre Dame, Ind., Saturday.

The Saints were 10-of-13 from beyond the arc, including the game-winner that broke a 91-91 tie. The tie came after a furious St. Ambrose rally saw the Bees erase what had been a 16-point deficit midway through the second half.

Down 76-60 with under 10 minutes remaining, St. Ambrose (11-9, 8-4 CCAC) was still down 10 at 89-79 with four minutes left. Elgin Bowen Jr.'s 3-pointer started a 12-2 run. Will Spriggs followed with a three-point play to cut the deficit to 89-84 and Bwoen followed with a jumper to trim the gap to just three points with three minutes on the clock.

Following two Holy Cross (8-12, 3-9 CCAC) free throws, Spriggs and Jake Friel hit consecutive jump shots to bring the Bees to within 91-90. Another SAU stop led to Ignacio Dacunda splitting two free throws to tie the game at 91-91.

St. Ambrose had two chances to take the lead down the stretch, but one possession ended with a turnover and Atem Agot missed the mark on a 3-pointer inside the final minute. The Saints capitalized, hitting the game winner to snap the Bees' four-game winning streak.

SAU shot nearly 54 percent from the floor and 36 percent from beyond the arc, but hit just 12-of-22 from the line.

Holy Cross shot better than 61 percent overall, including the 77-percent mark from deep. The Saints were also 24-of-24 on free throw attempts.

Bowen and Spriggs led the Bees with 18 points apiece. Dacunda scored 15 while Friel and Grant Mason each netted 14. Agot scored five, Collin Wainscott dropped in three, and Guillermo Narbona and Ryan Kenney each scored two.

St. Ambrose will host Calumet Wednesday.
