SAU takes down No. 22 Olivet Nazarene

St. Ambrose climbed into a tie for second place in the conference after knocking off No. 22 Olivet Nazarene 92-84 inside Lee Lohman Arena Wednesday night. The victory extended the Bees' winning streak to four games and snapped an eight-game losing skid in the series with the Tigers.

And SAU did it by coming up with big plays down the stretch after leading nearly wire-to-wire.

The Bees built their largest lead of the night at 75-61 on a Will Spriggs 3-pointer with 6:32 to play. But as St. Ambrose endured some struggles from the line, Olivet Nazarene (13-5, 7-3 CCAC) chipped away and ultimately got within five at 78-73 with just under three minutes remaining.

Atem Agot, who came off the bench to score 19 points, scored inside and Spriggs follwed with a steal and layup to push the lead to 82-73 with two minutes left.

From there, the Bees sealed the win from the line. After hitting just 6-of-12 free throws to start the second half, St. Ambrose buried 10-of-12 in the final two minutes. Spriggs hit 5-of-6, Agot and Ignacio Dacunda each knocked down a pair, and Grant Mason added one to help SAU break a third-place CCAC tie with ONU.

Now at 8-3 in the conference, St. Ambrose (11-8 overall) is tied with Indiana South Bend (13-6, 8-3 CCAC) for second, three games behind No. 13 Roosevelt (17-2, 11-0 CCAC).

Spriggs led the team with 20 points. Mason (14 points), Dacunda (13) and Jake Friel (12) joined Spriggs and Agot in double figures. Dacunda paced the team with nine rebounds.

Guillermo Narbona finished with eight points, eight rebounds and four assists. Elgin Bowen Jr. scored five points and Ryan Kenney chipped in with a point.

The Bee defense forced 15 turnovers leading to 23 points. SAU turned the ball over just eight times, leading to four Tiger points.

St. Ambrose will look to extend its four-game winning streak Saturday with a conference contest at Holy Cross.
