Spriggs scores 1000th career point as SAU rallies for overtime win

Will Spriggs hit the 1000-point milestone in helping St. Ambrose rally for a 75-71 overtime win over Indiana South Bend Saturday inside Lee Lohman Arena.

The Bees, who trailed 12-0 in the game's opening minutes, were able to recover to force overtime. Then SAU never trailed in the extra session.

Ignacio Dacunda started overtime with a 3-pointer and Spriggs followed with two free throws to give St. Ambrose a 64-59 lead. The teams traded baskets with scores from Dacunda and Jake Friel keeping SAU in front 68-63.

Every time IU South Bend (11-5, 6-2 CCAC) threatend, St. Ambrose (8-8, 5-3 CCAC) had the answer.

After a Titan 3-pointer cut the lead to 68-66, Grant Mason responded with a layup. Guillermo Narbona then knocked down a baseline jumper to push the Bees in front 72-66 inside the final minute. Another IUSB three made it a one-possession game. Friel split a pair of free throws for a four-point edge. South Bend hit a jumper to get within two, but forced to foul, the Titans again sent Friel to the line and the senior hit a pair with eight seconds left to seal the win.

The victory came after Spriggs joined the school's 1000-point club. The senior guard from Jacksonville, Fla., entered the game with 999 career points. He came off the bench and helped spark the Bees after the team missed its first seven shots to start the game.

Spriggs found Friel for a 3-pointer to get St. Ambrose on the board, and following a Friel layup, Spriggs hit the milestone, taking a pass from Friel and scoring at the rim.

Spriggs finished with 14 points, giving him 1,013 with the Bees.

Spriggs, Mason (12 points) and Collin Wainscott (eight) combined to give SAU a 34-10 advantage in points off the bench.

Friel shared team-high honors with 14 points. Narbona scored 12 and Dacunda added 11. Ryan Kenney added four points in the win. Narbona grabbed a team-best eight rebounds.

The Bees will host Trinity Christian Wednesday.
