SAU suffers loss to Concordia on return from break

St. Ambrose returned from break and suffered a 90-75 loss to Concordia (Neb.) Saturday afternoon at Lee Lohman Arena.

The guests shot nearly 53 percent from the floor, including a 62.5-percent mark in the second half, to hand the Bees their third straight loss.

SAU (6-7) held a 26-23 lead on a Collin Wainscott 3-pointer midway through the opening half. But the Bees would go scoreless on their next seven possessions, going 2-for-2 from the field and committing five turnovers, allowing the Bulldogs to go on a 12-0 run. Elgin Bowen Jr. eventually ended the run with a layup that put St. Ambrose down 35-28.

A Will Spriggs jumper had the deficit had 36-30 with three minutes left in the half. But Concordia (9-3) closed the half on a 12-5 run to take a 48-35 lead into the break.

And the Bulldogs, who shot 15-of-24 from the floor over the final 20 minutes, just didn't allow the Bees to make a run in the second half.

In a game featuring 43 fouls, the two teams combined to make 47 free throws. CU was 24-of-32 while SAU was 23-of-26 from the line.

Spriggs led St. Ambrose with 20 points and three steals. Bowen came off the bench to contribute 17 points. Grant Mason also reached double figures, scoring 13 points.

Atem Agot finished with eight points, Nathan Moeller scored six, Jake Friel and Zane Witt each had four and Wainscott netted three.

The Bees will return to CCAC action next Saturday at home against Governors State.
