SAU lets potential comeback win slip away late

After battling back from a 13-point second-half deficit, St. Ambrose let a potential comeback win slip away in the final minutes in a 75-69 home loss to Judson Saturday afternoon.

The Bees trailed 42-29 early in the second half and were behind 58-50 with eight minutes remaining. An Atem Agot three-point play triggered a 12-2 run. The three-point play was followed by a pair of free throws from both Nathan Moeller and Ignacio Dacunda. Judson (3-8, 2-3 CCAC) made two from the line to restore a 60-57 lead. But Dacunda followed with a layup and a 3-pointer to put St. Ambrose (6-5, 3-2 CCAC) in front 62-60 with just over five minutes remaining.

Ryan Kenney knocked down a 3-pointer to give SAU a 65-64 lead inside the final four minutes. But from there, the Bees missed five straight field goal attempts and two free throws as the Eagles went in front 69-65.

A Guillermo Narbona layup cut the deficit to 69-67. The teams then traded baskets with Kenney's jumper keeping St. Ambrose within two at 71-69 with less than a minute to play. SAU would not score again, missing its final three shot attempts as Judson iced the win with four straight free throws.

Along with shooting less than 39 percent from the floor (25-of-65), the Bees were also out-rebounded 48-35. That allowed the Eagles to gain a 16-2 edge in second-chance points.

Dacunda came off the bench to lead St. Ambrose with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Kenney scored 10.

Agot, Narbona, Jake Friel and Aiden Cilladi each contributed eight points. Ty Slager and Grant Mason each netted three while Moeller and Will Spriggs each added two points.

SAU will host Mount Vernon Nazarene Monday at 3 p.m.
