SAU unable to hold on in loss to Trinity International

A five-minute stretch midway through the second half cost St. Ambrose in a 74-65 home loss to Trinity International Monday night.

In a game they led most of the way, the Bees were in front 53-47 on two Andrew Morrissey free throws with 10:47 left in the game. But over the next nearly five-and-a-half minutes, SAU made just 1-of-7 attempts from the floor and committed three turnovers. St. Ambrose managed just a Jake Friel 3-pointer as Trinity International (14-12, 9-9 CCAC) pulled in front 62-56 thanks to a 15-3 run. Kieran Farrell ended the run with a 3-pointer of his own.

The Bees continued to battle and got to within two at 65-63 on another Friel three with just over four minutes remaining. SAU had two shots at the lead but both Will Spriggs and Friel misfired on 3-point tries.

The Trojans responded with five straight points to rebuild a 70-63 lead. Morrissey hit two from the line to cut the deficit to 70-65 with 43 seconds left, but that would be it for the Bees. TIU hit four late free throws to account for the final score.

St. Ambrose (4-19, 3-15 CCAC) shot just 22-of-68 from the field, a 32.4-percent mark. SAU was able to stay close by limiting TIU to 40.7 percent shooting (22-of-54) and grabbing a 49-35 rebounding advantage. The Bees also hit four more 3-pointers than the Trojans but Trinity more than doubled up St. Ambrose from the line, hitting 25-of-32 while the Bees were just 12-of-18.

Spriggs led SAU with 15 points. Morrissey finished with 14 and a game-high 11 rebounds. Friel scored 12 and handed out six assists.

Ignacio Dacunda finished with eight points and eight boards. Farrell and Jamon Thomas each came off the bench to contribute six points. Farrell also pulled down nine boards. Grant Mason added four points in the loss.

The Bees will hit the road for the final time to play at St. Francis Wednesday.
