Late comeback wasted as SAU falls in double overtime

St. Ambrose rallied from an eight-point deficit in the final 30 seconds of regulation only to fall in double overtime at Holy Cross 99-93 Saturday afternoon.

The Bees were down 71-63 inside the final minute of regulation. But an Ignacio Dacunda jumper sparked a rally. Will Spriggs followed with a steal, and was fouled, leading to two free throws to cut the deficit to 71-67.

After Holy Cross (12-14, 8-11 CCAC) made two free throws to go back up six, Jake Friel knocked down a triple to cut the gap in half. SAU got the ball back and Friel knocked down another triple to knot the score at 73-73. The Saints missed a potential game-winner in the final seconds as the game went into overtime.

Andrew Morrissey gave St. Ambrose a 76-73 lead with a triple just seconds into the first extra session. After that, the majority of the scoring came from the line. The Saints went 6-of-6 from the stripe while SAU was 3-of-4, with Spriggs' free throw with 45 seconds left tying the game at 81-81 and ultimately forcing a second overtime.

Holy Cross scored the first eight points of the second OT. St. Ambrose got as close as 89-85 on a Dacunda jumper with 1:28 to play, but the Saints answered with a 3-pointer on their next possession before hitting 7-of-8 free throws in the final seconds to seal the win.

The Bees (4-18, 3-14 CCAC) were outscored 35-20 from the line and surrendered a 51-37 advantage on the boards in the loss. SAU was able to stay close thanks to an 11-of-25 touch from beyond the arc.

Spriggs led the Bees with 20 points. Morrissey finished with an 18-point, 16-rebound double-double. Dacunda came off the bench to match Morrissey with 18 points. Friel netted 17, Max Steiner scored eight, Grant Mason had six, and Kieran Farrell and Evan Walsh each dropped in three.

SAU will return home to host Trinity International Monday.
