Late Wolves run sinks Fighting Bees

St. Ambrose was outscored 13-4 over the final three minutes to fall 88-79 at Cardinal Stritch Wednesday night.

In a game in which both teams shot better than 50 percent from the floor, the Bees overcame a 10-point, first-half deficit, and a Will Spriggs layup tied the game at 75-75 with three minutes remaining. But SAU would score just four points the rest of the way.

Cardinal Stritch (1-22, 1-14 CCAC) immediately answered with a basket, and following an SAU turnover, the Wolves hit 1-of-2 from the line to build a 78-75 lead. Andrew Morrissey knocked down a tough jumper to keep the Bees within a single point with under two minutes left. CSU hit a back-breaking 3-pointer to go up four. Spriggs couldn't get his next shot to fall and the Wolves hit two free throws to extend their lead to 83-77.

Jake Friel scored inside to cut the deficit to four, and after a Wolves turnover, had a shot to get the Bees back to within one, but his three was off the mark. Cardinal Stritch hit five free throws in the final 25 seconds to close out the game.

Both teams shot well from the floor. SAU was 25-of-46 (54.3 percent) overall and 7-of-16 (43.8 percent) from beyond the arc while CSU shot 29-of-57 (50.9 percent) from the field and 9-of-22 (40.9 percent) from deep.

The Wolves grabbed a 34-22 rebounding edge and turned 13 Bee turnovers into 22 points. SAU managed just nine points off nine Cardinal Stritch turnovers.

Friel led St. Ambrose with a season-high 24 points. Morrissey scored 13 to go along with seven rebounds. Spriggs finished with 12.

Grant Mason chipped in with six points, while Kieran Farrell, Jayven Jones and Ignacio Dacunda each scored five. Nikola Zelenovic, Amarey Wills, Nathan Moeller and Austin Born combined for the other nine Bee points.

SAU, now 3-14 overall and 2-11 in the CCAC, will visit Calumet Saturday.
