Big games from Morrissey, Spriggs not enough in loss at TCC

Despite big games from Andrew Morrissey and Will Spriggs, St. Ambrose fell at Trinity Christian 82-73 Saturday afternoon.

Morrissey totaled 29 points and 10 rebounds and Spriggs finished with 20 points. The pair combined for 32 of the Bees' 42 second-half points.

But it wasn't enough.

St. Ambrose ran into a Trinity Christian team that shot better than 58 percent from the floor in the first half in falling to 3-13 overall and 2-10 in the CCAC. That fast start and 19 Bee turnovers leading to 31 Troll points were too much to overcome.

St. Ambrose trailed by as many as 19 points in the opening half and was behind 46-31 at the half.

SAU turned to Morrissey in the second half. He scored the Bees' first 10 points after the break. Jake Friel and Nikola Zelenovic later added 3-pointers to get St. Ambrose to within 57-51 with 12 minutes left.

The Bees remained within six points at 65-59 with eight minutes to go. After a stop, Spriggs had a look at a three that would have pulled SAU to within three, but it was off the mark. That was the start of a dry spell. St. Ambrose missed four straight shots and had a stretch of three straight possessions ending in turnovers that allowed Trinity Christian (9-10, 5-8 CCAC) to go on a game-clinching 9-0 run.

Morrissey ended the drought with two free throws with 4:07 remaining, but by then the deficit was 74-61.

SAU again closed to within six at 79-73 on a Friel jumper with 36 seconds on the clock before the Trolls wrapped up the win with three late free throws.

Zelenovic came off the bench to hit three 3-pointers and finished with 10 points. Friel scored nine points, Kieran Farrell added three and Nathan Moeller ended with two.

St. Ambrose will visit Cardinal Stritch Wednesday.
