SAU pulls away in second half to defeat Governors State

Playing for the first time in two weeks, St. Ambrose found its footing in the second half and pulled away for a 77-64 home win over Governors State Wednesday night.

The Bees outscored the Jaguars 32-19 over the game's final 13 minutes. Nathan Moeller packed nine of his 16 points in those 13 minutes, which included a layup that broke a 45-45 tie and gave SAU the lead for good.

After shooting just just over 41 percent (15-of-36), St. Ambrose shot at a nearly 53-percent clip down the stretch. And the Bees got contributions late from several players besides Moeller.

Grant Mason scored seven of his game-high 20 points during the late run. Will Spriggs scored five late, including two free throws that pushed the lead to 67-56 inside the final five minutes. Kieran Farrell hit a 3-pointer to extend the lead to 71-59 with 2:30 to play and all but sealed the win with a layup for a 75-62 advantage with just under two minutes left. Andrew Morrissey (four points) and Amarey Wills (two) also scored in the final charge.

The Bees also did it on the defensive end of the floor, holding the Jaguars to 7-of-18 shooting and forcing five turnovers over the final 13 minutes.

The strong close came after a great start. Morrissey, Farrell and Jake Friel combined for four 3-pointers to give St. Ambrose an early 12-8 lead. Governors State (4-13, 4-5 CCAC) battled back and ultimately led by as many as eight points midway through the opening half.

SAU trailed 36-31 at the half before Mason opened the second half with a layup and Farrell followed with another three to draw the teams even at 36-36. The game remained close from there until the Bees' final push.

Mason and Moeller were two of four Bees to finish in double figures. Farrell hit four from 3-point range to finish with 14 points. Morrissey added 11.

Moeller grabbed a game-high eight rebounds. Morrissey and Spriggs each collected six. Jayven Jones and Friel were credited with four assists apiece in the win.

St. Ambrose (3-8, 2-5 CCAC) will host Trinity Christian Friday at 1 p.m.
