Bees fall to Jaguars 72-62

After opening the second half with a 10-3 run, St. Ambrose scored only five points over the next eight-plus minutes. That proved to be the difference in a 72-62 loss at Governors State Saturday afternoon.

With the game tied at 32-32 at the half, Andrew Morrissey scored six points during the Bees' early run. Amarey Wills and Grant Mason also scored in the spurt that opened up a 42-35 lead four minutes into the second half.

But SAU struggled to score over the next eight minutes. A Will Spriggs 3-pointer that put the Bees in front 45-44 and a Spriggs jumper that cut a Jaguar lead to 48-47 were the only two baskets St. Ambrose would as Governors State (4-11, 4-4 CCAC) used a 20-5 run to pull ahead 55-47.

SAU got no closer than four points the rest of the way.

The Bees limited the Jaguars to 42.2 percent shooting, including an 8-of-17 mark from beyond the arc. But St. Ambrose wasn't able to capitalize, as the Bees shot just 41.9 percent and 3-of-15 on threes.

Morrissey led St. Ambrose with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Spriggs scored all 14 of the Bees' bench points. Wills had 12 and Mason netted 10 in the loss. Jayven Jones and Kieran Farrell accounted for the other five SAU points. Farrell also pulled down eight rebounds.

The Bees (2-7, 1-4 CCAC) will visit Trinity International Tuesday.
