St. Ambrose drops CCAC opener at Judson

Judson used a 22-2 run over a six-minute span of the second half to defeat St. Ambrose 74-72 in the Bees' CCAC opener in Elgin, Ill., Wednesday night.

SAU opened the second half with an 8-0 run behind 3-pointers from Andrew Morrissey and Kieran Farrell to take a 50-38 lead. Midway through the half, an Amarey Wills jumper gave the Bees their largest lead of the night at 62-48 with 12:14 to play.

But it all fell apart over the next six minutes. The Eagles went on their 22-2 run to grab a 70-64 lead with the only Bee points coming on a Wills layup. Two Patrick Torrey free throws ended the Judson spurt.

Trailing 74-66 with just over two minutes remaining, St. Ambrose put together a furious rally. Farrell had a layup, Wills scored inside, and a Torrey steal led to another Farrell layup to trim the deficit to 74-72 with 1:26 left.

SAU had two chances in the final minute to tie or take the lead. The first opportunity was erased on an offensive foul call, and in the closing seconds, Will Spriggs' good look at a 3-pointer rimmed out. Judson grabbed the rebound and dribbled out the clock to escape with the victory.

St. Ambrose shot better than 46 percent from the floor but connected on just 4-of-13 attempts from beyond the arc. Judson (1-3, 1-0 CCAC) buried 10 3-pointers in 19 tries.

Farrell led the Bees with 18 points on 8-of-12 shooting. Torrey came off the bench to knock down 6-of-8 shots in scoring 16 points. Wills netted 12.

Jayven Jones scored nine points and Ignacio Dacunda finished with eight.

SAU, now 1-3 overall and 0-1 in the CCAC, will look to bounce back Saturday at home against Roosevelt.
