Bees' senior day spoiled by hot-shooting Saints

The Fighting Bees' celebration of their seniors was sullied in a game where it felt the opponent couldn't miss.

The Holy Cross Saints (12-16, 8-9 CCAC) came into Lee Lohman Arena Saturday afternoon with a hot-shooting stroke, shooting over 50-percent from the floor and a near 48-percent clip from deep.

St. Ambrose kept pace in the first half, even building a four-point lead off a Davion Williams driving layup. But Holy Cross would open up 9-0 run to take the lead. In the final two minutes of the first half, the two squads combined for eight-made three-pointers in a row, with Kieran FarrellJake Friel, and Grant Mason all knocking one down.

The Saints would stack up a 15-point lead at the midway point of the second half, but the Mason and senior forward Tom Kazanecki would combine to score ten-straight points and cut the lead down to five.

With the game hanging in the balance, the Bees couldn't find the shots to close the gap. Ben Schols would knock down a three to keep it within two possessions, but five straight points from the Saints would put the game out of reach.

The Bees would ultimately drop the bout 86-73, moving their overall record to 12-15 and their conference record to 9-11. Kazanecki led the Bees with 20 points and nine rebounds. Mason came off the bench to fill in 19. Schols was the only other Bee in double figures with 11.

Williams scored seven off the bench. Will Spriggs finished with seven points, four rebounds and four assists.

The Bees will play their final home game of the season Wednesday when they host St. Francis (Ill.) in a conference tilt.
