Bees top Wave for third-straight win

The St. Ambrose men's basketball team welcomed Calumet St. Joseph to Lee Lohman Arena Saturday afternoon for a CCAC matchup. The Fighting Bees showed great energy and took down the Wave 80-67 for their third-straight victory.

Calumet (4-13, 3-12 CCAC) scored the opening basket of the game, but this was the only time they would have control of the lead. The Bees offense was lights-out, with senior forward Ben Schols heating up from downtown.

Schols knocked down five-of-six threes, all coming in the first half, to lead the Fighting Bees' deep-range attack. The Bees shot a scorching 53-percent from beyond the arc, hitting 10 threes over the game.

With Schols cold-blooded attack from deep early in the first, the Bees were able to open up 26-9 lead by the midway point of the first half. The Crimson Wave were able to go on a run of their own, cutting the deficit all the way down to six points.

This would be the closest the Wave would get in the CCAC-tilt, with Schols and the Bees outscoring them 17-6 to take a commanding 17-point lead into the break.

The second half was more of the same, with the Wave gaining bits of momentum, but the Bees being able to keep their composure and hit the big shots when it mattered most.

With under five minutes to play and the cut down to single-digits, Tom Kazanecki collected a steal and kicked out to Will Spriggs for a breakaway layup. Jake Friel would put the finishing touches on the game with a four-point play that all but sealed things up Saturday afternoon, with the game coming to a close at 80-67.

In a balanced offensive effort, four Bees finished the game in double figures. Spriggs led St. Ambrose with 20. Schols finished with 18, with 15 of those coming from deep. Friel ended with 16 points, six rebounds, and six assists while Kazanecki scored 12 and brought down nine boards.

Jake Conerty had an extremely productive game off the bench, leading the Bees in rebounds and assists with 10 and nine, respectively. Patrick Torrey contributed four points and five boards. Grant Mason and Davion Williams came off the bench to each drop in a bucket.

The win over the Wave is the Bees sixth win in eight games., moving the squad to 10-12 overall and 9-8 in the CCAC, their first time over .500 in the conference since Dec. 1.

The St. Ambrose men's basketball team will take a quick break from CCAC-play to take on Iowa Wesleyan in Mt. Pleasant on Monday.
