Bees get big win on the road against Governors State

Will Spriggs scored 29 points and Tom Kazanecki added 19 points to lead St. Ambrose to a 86-78 win over Governors State Wednesday night in University Park, Ill.

With the game tied at 73 and three minutes to play, Spriggs scored back-to-back baskets and assisted on a Kazanecki layup with a minute remaining to grab a seven-point lead. Spriggs and Ben Schols went a perfect 6-for-6 from the free-throw line in the final stretch of the game to put the game on ice.

The win snaps a seven-game skid for the Bees and moves them to 5-10 overall and 4-6 in the conference.

The late free throws capped an 11-of-13 performance on the night for the Bees which was vital in a game that saw eight ties and five lead changes over the 40 minutes of action. The Bees as a team shot just over 53 percent from the floor while simultaneously limiting the Jaguars to a 40 percent shooting clip.

Governors State (6-10, 3-6 CCAC) led by as many as 10 points only five minutes into the game, but the Bees were able to mount the comeback and secure their fourth conference win of the season.

Schols and Jake Friel both closed out the game in double-figures, with Schols dropping in 12 and Friel adding 11. Davion Williams came off the bench to score five points and grab five boards in his first appearance of the year.

Kazanecki brought down a game-high 12 rebounds to tally his sixth double-double of the season.

The Bees will look to build off the win with a conference matchup against Lincoln College on Saturday in Lincoln, Ill.
