First-half run gets Lakers past Fighting Bees

First-half run gets Lakers past Fighting Bees

A 16-4 run over a nearly-five-minute stretch of the first half was enough to help Roosevelt get past St. Ambrose 92-75 Thursday night in Chicago.

The Bees had led 26-25 on a Will Spriggs layup at the midway point of the first half before the Lakers went on their run. Roosevelt (8-4, 5-2 CCAC) hit four of their nine first-half 3-pointers during the stretch. SAU, meanwhile, committed turnovers on five of its eight possessions during the spurt. The only Bee points came on a Tom Kazanecki layup and two Jake Conerty free throws.

That run gave the Lakers a 41-30 lead and they maintained an 11-point advantage at 48-37 at the half.

Roosevelt scored the first eight points of the second half as St. Ambrose missed its first four shots of the half and committed a pair of turnovers as the Lakers opened up a 56-37 edge.

The Bees made a bit of a run in the second half. Trailing 72-49, St. Ambrose scored the next seven points on a Nathan Moeller free throw and six straight points from Spriggs. After Roosevelt scored, Trey Affolter knocked down a 3-pointer to trim the margin to 74-59 with just under seven minutes remaining. But the Lakers scored the next six points to regain an 80-59 lead and the Bees would get no closer than 15 the rest of the way.

Spriggs led St. Ambrose with 23 points on 9-of-12 shooting. He was the only Bee to score in double figures.

Kazanecki and Grant Mason each scored nine points, Ben Schols finished with eight, and Jake Friel and Nolan Griffin each added seven.

Kazanecki grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds in the loss.

Roosevelt scored 30 points off 15 SAU turnovers. The Lakers committed just five turnovers, leading to five Bee points.

St. Ambrose will visit No. 24 Marian in a non-conference contest Sunday.
