Big games from Kazanecki, Spriggs and Mason not enough in loss at TIU

Tom KazaneckiWill Spriggs and Grant Mason combined for 64 points but it wasn't enough as St. Ambrose fell at Trinity International 92-88 Saturday afternoon.

Kazanecki scored a team-high 24 points, Spriggs came off the bench to net 21 and Mason added 19. No other Bee scored more than Drake Gunn's seven points as SAU dropped to 4-5 overall and 3-3 in the CCAC.

The Bee trio combined to shoot 25-of-44 from the field, including 7-of-14 on threes, as the team finished 35-of-70 overall. It just wasn't good enough as the Trojans shot better than 53 percent overall and knocked down 11-of-23 (47.8 percent) from 3-point range.

The game was tied at 42-42 at halftime, but Trinity International (6-6, 3-3 CCAC) led by as many as 13 points inside the final six minutes of the contest. The deficit was still 85-75 with just over three minutes remaining.

St. Ambrose made things interesting as Mason knocked down a jumper and Kazanecki drilled a three to cut the margin to 85-80. After a Trojan free throw, Mason and Spriggs each scored to get the Bees within two at 86-84 with 90 seconds on the clock.

But after getting the stop they needed, the Bees watched the Trojans track down an offensive rebound, which led to a 3-pointer to restore a five-point lead.

Spriggs scored again but TIU hit two from the line to keep the margin at 91-86. Ben Schols gave SAU a final chance, scoring to cut the deficit to three, but Trinity hit the second of two free throws with three seconds left to seal the win.

Along with leading the team in scoring, Kazanecki pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds.

Jake Conerty contributed six points and seven boards. Jake Friel added five points, six rebounds and three assists. Mason led the Bees with four assists.

St. Ambrose will next visit Mount Mercy Monday in a non-conference tilt.
