Defense keys 75-59 victory at Calumet St. Joseph

St. Ambrose rode a fast start, and its defense, to a 75-59 win at Calumet St. Joseph Tuesday night.

The Bees held the Crimson Wave to less than 30 percent shooting in the first half and below 32 percent for the game.

Five different Bees scored as part of a game-starting 22-4 run. Tom Kazanecki scored seven of those points, Will Spriggs hit two 3-pointers for six points, Drake Gunn had five, and Grant Mason and Ben Schols had two points apiece. Calumet meanwhile, missed five of its first six shots and committed two turnovers in facing the 18-point deficit just six minutes into the game.

Trailing 45-28 at the half, the Wave (2-4, 2-2 CCAC) battled back to get within eight points at 55-47 midway through the second half. But seconds later, Schols buried a 3-pointer and that sparked another Bee run.

After Calumet closed to within eight, St. Ambrose would score the next 14 points, with much of that damage coming from the line. Patrick Torrey hit four free throws, Kazanecki and Mason each knocked down two, and Schols added another triple to extend the lead to 69-47 with less than four minutes remaining to effectively seal the win.

Kazanecki led four Bees in double figures with 21 points. He also grabbed a team-leading nine rebounds.

Spriggs scored 15 points while dishing out four assists. Schols totaled 14 points and six assists. And Mason finished with 12 points.

Torrey contributed eight points and seven rebounds off the bench.

Schols, Kazanecki and Spriggs combined to hit 7-of-14 from beyond the arc as SAU finished 8-of-19 on threes as a team. Calumet was just 4-of-19 from 3-point range.

The Bees, now 4-3 overall and 3-1 in the conference, will next host Lincoln College on Dec. 1.
