Schols and Kazanecki lift SAU past Trinity Christian

Ben Schols scored 31 points and Tom Kazanecki added 28 points and 14 rebounds to lead St. Ambrose past Trinity Christian 95-89 Saturday afternoon in Palos Heights, Ill.

The two came up big down the stretch to help the Bees move to 3-3 overall and 2-1 in the CCAC.

Trailing by as many as eight points just past the midway point of the second half, SAU finally pulled even in the closing minutes. With the scored tied at 84-84 and less than three minutes left to play, Kazanecki buried a 3-pointer from the top of the key that proved to give the Bees the lead for good.

The three sparked an 8-0 run with the other points all coming from the line. Schols knocked down two free throws, Will Spriggs hit one, and Kazanecki put the lead at 92-84 with 42 seconds left with two more free throws.

Schols added three more from the line over the final 11 seconds to hold off the Trolls.

The late free throws capped a 12-of-13 performance from the line for Schols. He also connected on 8-of-13 field goal attempts, including three 3-pointers, in scoring a career-high 31 points.

Kazanecki also reached a career best, pouring in his 28 points on 10-of-15 shooting. He also hit three triples in four tries.

The two seniors helped St. Ambrose shoot better than 55 percent from the floor as a team. SAU was also 7-of-13 from beyond the arc and 34-of-46 from the line in the win.

Grant Mason scored 12 points to give the Bees three players in double figures.

Spriggs finished with nine points, Drake Gunn netted six and Nolan Griffin dropped in four.

Patrick Torrey chipped in with three points and six rebounds off the bench. Jake Conerty handed out a team-leading four assists.

St. Ambrose will visit Calumet St. Joseph Tuesday.
