Ward ties career touchdown reception mark in loss to No. 15 Cougars

Yemi Ward matched Brad Connor's school record with his 33rd and 34th career touchdown receptions in a 38-13 loss to No. 15 Saint Xavier Saturday at Jack and Pat Bush Stadium in Davenport, Iowa, Saturday.

Ward hauled in a 25-yard touchdown pass from Joey Sprinkle late in the first quarter that had the Bees within 14-7. Then, in the fourth, the duo connected again, this time on a 47-yard strike, to move Ward up the list.

Ward finished with seven receptions for 97 yards in the loss. The two touchdowns give him 11 on the year and 34 in his career. Connor set the mark in 2016.

But the two touchdowns weren't enough for the Bees to keep pace with the nationally-ranked Cougars. Saint Xavier (5-3, 3-0 MSFA) threw five touchdown passes, three of them more than 40 yards, to pull away.

SXU scored a pair of second-quarter touchdowns after Ward's first touchdown to open a 28-7 halftime lead. The Cougars added 10 more points in the third quarter before Ward ended the scoring with his record-tying reception.

The Bees finished with just 201 yards of total offense, including 16 yards on the ground. Kaden King had 20 yards on 11 carries while Calvin Lee (five) and Jeffery Elms (three) combined for eight yards on 11 attempts.

Sprinkle completed 12-of-22 passes for 185 yards. He was sacked 10 times. Mikey Hellwig had two receptions for 12 yards. Brennan Wilson, Devan Galant and Kyle Yehling each caught one pass.

George Litgen III led the defense with 12 total tackles. Jake Strater was in on 10 stops. Max Gourley had seven tackles, including 4.5 tackles for loss and two sacks. Colin Gudella also had seven tackles. D'Mauryon Hunter intercepted a pass in the loss.

St. Ambrose (0-8, 0-3 MSFA) will play its final home game of the season next Saturday against Judson.
