Bees stumble at Siena Heights

St. Ambrose football traveled to Adrian, Michigan on Saturday to take on the Siena Heights Saints. The Bees fell behind 21-0 and could never recover, leading to a 28-14 loss.

The home team scored on their second drive, a 1-yard rush by Elijah Taylor to take a 7-0 lead with 8:13 remaining in the first quarter. Two three-and-outs for SAU followed, and Siena Heights added to their lead in the second quarter on a 2-yard rush for a 14-0 score with 13:41 left until half. The Bees were driving on their next possession, with Jake Ackman finding Yemi Ward for a 24-yard catch down to the Siena Heights 19. St. Ambrose would miss out on points as the home team forced and then recovered a fumble to head into halftime down 14-0.

SAU failed to convert on a fourth down on their first possession of the second half, and the Saints took advantage. Siena Heights tacked on another score for a 21-0 lead with 10:38 left in the third quarter. After the Siena score, the Bees went on a 12-play, 62-yard drive. Ackman found Ward and Mikey Hellwig on pass plays, and Jeffery Elms and Kaden King provided the rushing attack during the series. The drive culminated in a fourth down conversion with Ackman finding Ward for a 14-yard touchdown to make it 21-7 with 6:07 on the clock in the third.

The Saints would answer right back, scoring on a 34-yard pass to grow their lead to 28-7 with 2:18 remaining in the frame. St. Ambrose was helped on their next possession by two pass interference penalties to keep the drive going, and Elms found the end zone on a 2-yard rush. Joe Namio's point after was good for a 28-14 score with 13:35 left in the game. The Bee defense came up huge following the touchdown. Siena Heights had 2nd and goal from the 4-yard line, but SAU forced a fumble and recovered to keep the Saints out of the end zone and the scoreline at 28-14 with 6:23 to go. The Bee offense was unable to capitalize on the turnover as they gave the ball back on an interception. St. Ambrose's defense forced a three-and-out to get the ball back with 3:15 left, but SAU was intercepted again for the 28-14 final.

Ackman came in for the injured Joey Sprinkle and went 17-28 for 157 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. Elms went for 84 yards on 19 attempts with one score, and King had four rushes for 24 yards. Hellwig caught five passes for 79 yards, and Ward had 10 catches for 73 and a touchdown. Jake Strater had nine total tackles to lead the SAU defense, with George Litgen III (eight), Rolando Sepulveda (seven), and Micheal Robinson (six) close behind. Jarian Dunlap Jr., D'Mauryon Hunter, Jon Guch, and Nolan Obert had five tackles apiece.

St. Ambrose will be back home at Jack and Pat Bush Stadium on Saturday, September 23. The Bees will take on Saint Francis (Ind.) at 1 p.m.
