St. Ambrose comes up empty in loss at Roosevelt

The Bees ran 25 more plays and finished with a 15-minute advantage in time of possession, but it wasn't enough to get a win. Roosevelt used big plays in the fourth quarter to rally for a 35-21 win in Arlington Heights, Ill., Saturday.

After John Benckendorf found Hunter Thompson with a 6-yard touchdown pass to give St. Ambrose a 21-14 lead on the first play of the fourth quarter, the Bees struggled the rest of the way.

The Lakers (4-4) scored on their next three possessions, using 43- and 58-yard touchdown passes and a 21-yard touchdown run to earn the 14-point victory. The Bees totaled zero yards of offense over their final three drives to drop to 3-6 overall and 2-3 in the MSFA Midwest League.

St. Ambrose twice battled back from touchdown deficits in the first half.

Ray Bouye scored on a 1-yard run to tie the game at 7-7 in the first quarter and Benckendorf knotted the game at 14-14 in the second on a 57-yard run.

The Bees had chances to grab the lead but Joe Namio's 29-yard field goal attempt on the final play of the opening half was blocked. And on the team's first possession of the second half, after facing a third-and-2 on the RU 16-yard line, three straight SAU penalties backed the team up to the 36-yard line and the drive ultimately ended with a punt.

St. Ambrose ultimately went in front on an eight-play drive that culminated in the Benckendorf-to-Thompson touchdown pass to start the final period before it fell apart.

SAU ran 73 total plays and held the ball for more than 37 minutes while Roosevelt had just 48 offensive snaps.

Benckendorf completed 12-of-20 passes for 110 yards and the TD pass.

Thompson caught four passes for 26 yards, while Blake Wittman (three catches, 24 yards) and Yemi Ward (two catches, 40 yards) had multiple receptions.

Bouye ran for 80 yards on 21 carries.

Vince Shaw led the defense with six total tackles. Ethan Miebach and Nick Daniel were each in on five stops. Drew Ackman recorded two of the Bees' five tackles for loss.

Things don't get any easier as SAU returns home to host No. 18 Saint Xavier next Saturday at 1 p.m. at Brady Street Stadium.
